Castlebar remains ‘Europe’s luckiest lotto town’
It’s the question on everyone’s lips in Castlebar – who scooped the €19 million lotto jackpot?
The winning ticket was sold in Laura’s XL on Hopkins’ Road in the town but beyond that things are less clear.
The winner(s) have contacted the National Lottery HQ in Dublin but it is not even known by the Lottery themselves if it is a syndicate or a single winner.
Fran Whearty of the National Lottery Press Office confirmed that they were contacted on Monday evening of last week by the winner.
“The first piece of advice we give any winner is to go away and get their financial and legal advice together before collecting. That’s what they’re doing now and they’ll come to us when they’re ready,” Mr Whearty told The Mayo News.
“We don’t know if it is a syndicate or a single winner until they come forward. Once they fill in the claim form, we will know then,” he said.
The Lottery also advice winners to keep the ticket in a ‘safe place’. Mr Whearty recalls that the €17 million Euromillions winning ticket sold at Mulroy’s in Castlebar in February 2020 was kept safe in a bible before the winner presented it for collection.
It’s the latest in a series of big lottery wins in Castlebar as the town cements its reputation as ‘Europe’s luckiest lotto town’.
Four big wins
The town has had four jackpot winners with a combined worth of €80 million in less than eight years.
The latest win is the largest ever Irish lotto prize but it is not even the greatest lottery win in Castlebar.
In July 2019, a syndicate scooped a staggering €29 million EuroMillions jackpot at Garryduff XL on the Pound Road in the town.
The first big jackpot in the town was in April 2014 when the town had its first ever Euromillions jackpot when the €15 million winning ticket was sold at Staunton’s Costcutter on Main Street. The third Euromillions jackpot is the aforementioned winner in Mulroy’s with the most recent winner, this time of the Irish lotto, scooping a tasty €19 million.
“It’s incredible for a town of less than 15,000 people,” added Mr Whearty.
